Plumbing: We repair the sewer with our own hands

Plumbing: We repair the sewer with our own hands

The sewerage system in some apartments can be attributed to a rather complex design. Every year, additional plumbing fixtures may appear in the dwelling, and all of them require a reliable connection to the sewer system to provide drains.

Therefore, during operation, small, and sometimes rather large, malfunctions cannot be avoided. It is quite possible to cope with some malfunctions in the sewage system on its own; this does not require expensive tools and materials.

When is the plumbing repair of the sewer system necessary?

The first sign may be an unpleasant odor that can spread not only in the bathroom or bathroom but throughout the apartment. Sometimes small leaks appear at the joints of the pipe joints or on the surface of the pipe itself. Plumbing repair will also be required in the event of a complete refusal of the sewage system, the drains simply will not leave the system pipeline. All these malfunctions require immediate elimination.

One of the malfunctions may be a partial blockage or complete blockage of a place in the sewer system.

Quite often, clogging occurs in siphons, they are located at the bottom of plumbing fixtures. Small particles of debris are constantly deposited in the siphons and over time these places have to be periodically cleaned.
A plunger is required for this operation. After a few strong pushing movements, the blockage is removed.

The use of chemicals for this problem is also an effective way. In extreme cases, you will have to disassemble the siphon, remove accumulated debris and dirt. When assembling the siphon in the reverse order, it is necessary to inspect its gaskets, you may have to replace them or use a sealant. Sometimes the siphon is completely replaced.

In the event of a clogged toilet, using a plunger can also be effective, but not always. You will have to use special tools or a cable for cleaning. Only in extreme cases will it be necessary to call a specialized team with equipment. After cleaning the system, it must be spilled with a large volume of water, preferably hot.

Plumbing repair of leaks of cast iron sewer pipes

In old-built apartments, you can still often find a sewage system made of cast-iron pipes. If the joints of these pipes leak, you will have to make some effort. The joints of cast-iron pipes are connected in two ways: lead and cement. Therefore, sewer repair is carried out by different methods.

When cementing cast-iron joints, the order of work is as follows:
1. the chisel removes unnecessary cement mortar – work is done with caution;
2. this joint must be cleaned;
3. a special composition of cement and asbestos is prepared (7: 4). A solution is prepared with water, the consistency is in the form of plasticine;
4. the joint of the cast iron pipe is sealed.

With a lead connection, the order of work is as follows:

1. the joint is cleaned;
2. With a chisel and a hammer, lead cones are mounted in a joint. Lead is easily knocked out with a hammer, the material is easily deformed.

When repairing small cracks in cast-iron pipes, you can get by with a simple “caulking” of this place with a chisel and hammer. You can drive a lead wedge. All this applies to small holes and cracks.

If a significant part of the cast iron pipe is damaged, then rather laborious work will have to be done. The damaged part of the pipe is cut out with a grinder. The assembly loosens the pipe at the joint, and this part is dismantled. The joint is cleaned. For repairs, a rubber coupling is required, its inner diameter must match the outer diameter of the pipe. These couplings are available from plumbing stores. The coupling is mounted with a sealant, the joint is treated with cement mortar and painted.

Plastic sewer pipes should not be repaired. You can apply a sealant for a short time, but later on, it is necessary to purchase new plastic elements, since such a repair will not be durable. When plumbing repairs sewer plastic pipes, special attention is paid not only to the sealing of their joints but also to the proper fastening of the entire structure with special clamps.
